Flexible Instruction / Remote Learning

Blackhawk School District may utilize Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs), also referred to as Remote Learning Days, in situations where school buildings need to be closed (e.g., due to inclement weather or other emergencies). On these days, students will engage in virtual learning through their iPads. Unlike traditional closures, FIDs count as full instructional days and do not need to be made up later in the school year.

Key Information for K–4 Families:

  • Notification: The district will announce the use of a Flexible Instruction Day through phone call, email, and posts on the district website and local news outlets.

  • iPad Use: Students are expected to bring their iPads home daily to ensure they are prepared for a potential Remote Learning Day. iPads should be packed securely, and water bottles should not be placed in the same backpack to prevent damage not covered by insurance.

  • Instruction: Remote Learning Days for grades K–4 will primarily be asynchronous to accommodate the needs of younger learners. Teachers will post assignments on student iPads, and live support will be available via Microsoft Teams from 9:30–10:30 AM and 12:00–12:30 PM. Students who complete their assignments will be marked present for the day.

  • Internet Access: If your household does not have reliable internet access, please contact your child’s teacher. The district will work with families to provide accommodations to ensure all students can participate in learning activities.

  • Technology Monitoring: All district-owned devices, including student iPads, are monitored using Securly, a cloud-based content filtering system. Securly logs web and email activity both at school and at home. While this provides an added layer of safety, parents are encouraged to actively supervise their child’s technology use.

  • Online Safety Resources: The following resources are available to support family discussions about online safety:
    Connect Safely
    Family Online Safety Institute
    FTC Kids Online Safety
