1 to 1 Parent/Student Guide - Highland Middle School

Daily Expectations for iPads

  • Students are to bring charged iPads to each class daily.

  • iPads are to be used as an integral part of every classroom.

  • Classroom iPad usage should support measurable educational goals.

  • Teachers are in control of when and how students are to use their iPads in class.

  • Students are responsible for keeping their iPads in good working order.

Becoming Familiar with the iPad

A series of online tutorials have been created to assist students and parents in learning how the iPad works, how to complete basic tasks, and how to participate in virtual learning via Microsoft Teams when appropriate.

Required Sign-Off Forms

Several iPad sign-off forms must be completed prior to a student receiving an iPad.

  • The forms are available for digital acceptance in Skyward Family Access.

  • Downloadable copies are also available on the 1-to-1 Forms page.

Insurance Requirements (Grades 5–8)

  • iPad insurance can optionally be purchased by families in grades 5–8.

  • Insurance coverage is $40 per year, per student.

  • The maximum insurance cost per family is $80 per year.

What the Insurance Covers

A summary of the insurance coverage can be found on the iPad Insurance and Coverage page.

How to Sign Up

  • Parents will opt in or opt out of insurance coverage in Skyward Family Access.

  • If insurance is selected, payment must be made using the FNB eGov online payment portal.

  • Parents will have until September 15 to submit payment. After that date, coverage will be dropped until payment is received.

Waivers

  • Students enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch program are eligible to have their insurance fee waived. In lieu of payment, the iPad Insurance Waiver Form must be submitted to any building office.

  • Families experiencing financial hardship should contact their building principal to discuss additional waiver options.

Without Insurance

  • The student/family is responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement.

  • Replacement iPad: $299.

  • Repairs: typically range from $59 (headphone jack) to $239 (cracked screen).

Technical Difficulties

  • Students should report any technical difficulty to their classroom teacher.

  • If needed, the teacher will work with the technology department to resolve the issue.

Internet Filtering

Starting in the 2021–2022 school year, all district devices have Internet usage filtered and tracked at all times. Logs of student Internet access may be reviewed by district administration at any time.

Apps

  • Each iPad has a Self Service app that allows students to download district-approved apps.

  • Students do not have access to the App Store.

  • Students can delete apps, and re-download them later via Self Service.

  • Students are encouraged to delete apps no longer needed to free up storage.

Core Apps for Document Creation

Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are required as the “core apps” for classwork.

File Storage

  • Microsoft OneDrive: 1 TB of storage (required for all “core apps” documents).

  • Apple iCloud: 200 GB storage (via Managed Apple ID).

  • Tutorials will guide students on organizing and saving files.

Managed Apple ID

  • Provided by Blackhawk School District.

  • Uses Single Sign-On (same username/password as Microsoft Office 365 email).

  • Grants access to 200 GB of iCloud storage.

Offline Access

  • Files can be saved directly to the iPad for offline use.

  • Tutorials provide guidance on offline file management.

  • See the Connectivity Assistance page for help obtaining Internet access.

Restricted Areas

iPads are not permitted in:

  • Restrooms

  • Locker rooms

  • Nurse’s office (must be turned off)

Classroom Management

  • Teachers will say “screens down” when technology use must stop.

  • Noncompliance will be handled as a normal insubordination offense.

Passcodes

  • Students are encouraged, but not required, to use a passcode.

  • Teachers may request students unlock iPads at any time.

  • District IT staff can bypass passcodes if needed.

Replacement Cables/Adapters

Forgotten or Serviced iPads

  • Loaner iPads are managed by grade-level teachers at Highland Middle School:

    • 8th Grade: Phelps

    • 7th Grade: Cox

    • 6th Grade: Braddock

    • 5th Grade: Muslin

  • Loaners must be requested in homeroom, returned at the end of the day, and sanitized by the student.

  • If an iPad is forgotten for 5 consecutive days, it will be considered lost and replacement costs apply.

Damaged iPads

  • Report immediately to a teacher.

  • Complete an iPad Damage Report (investigated by an administrator).

  • If negligence is determined, student is responsible (deductible, repair cost, or full replacement).

  • A loaner will be issued until repair/replacement.

Stolen iPads

  • Report to local police and obtain a report.

  • Notify the building principal so IT can disable the iPad and track via GPS.

Device Management

  • District can track GPS, installed apps, and activity.

  • Stolen iPads cannot be resold or reused; district management profile reinstalls on Wi-Fi connection, and GPS continues reporting.

Cases and Accessories

  • Students must use the district-provided case.

  • A list of approved accessories can be found on the "Approved iPad Accessories List" page.

  • Stickers are allowed if removable without damage. Drawing on cases is not permitted.

  • Damage to cases will result in financial responsibility for replacement.

End-of-Year Collection

  • Highland principals will send details each spring.

  • 8th grade: iPads collected and replaced for 9th grade.

  • Grades 5–7: keep iPads over summer.

  • Charging cables/bricks are not collected; students keep them until the next iPad purchase cycle.

  • New iPad charging cables and charging bricks will only be provided to students once per iPad purchase cycle (i.e. when the district purchases new iPads, each students will get a new cable and charging brick).
