1 to 1 Parent/Student Guide - Patterson Primary School

How Will the 1-to-1 iPad Program Work?

  • Each student will have their own iPad, stored in a classroom charging cabinet.

  • iPads will remain in the classroom unless students are required to take them home (e.g., during a COVID-19 virtual schedule or Flexible Instruction Day).

  • The building principal will determine when it is appropriate for students to take iPads home.

Daily Expectations for iPads

  • Students are to bring charged iPads to each class daily.

  • iPads are to be used as an integral part of every classroom.

  • Classroom iPad usage should support measurable educational goals.

  • Teachers are in control of when and how students are to use their iPads in class.

  • Students are responsible for keeping their iPads in good working order.

Becoming Familiar with the iPad

A series of online tutorials have been created to assist students and parents in learning how the iPad works, how to complete basic tasks, and how to participate in virtual learning via Microsoft Teams when appropriate.

Required Sign-Off Forms

Several iPad sign-off forms must be completed prior to a student receiving an iPad.

  • Forms are available for digital acceptance in Skyward Family Access.

  • Downloadable copies are also available on the 1-to-1 Forms page.

Insurance Requirements (Grades K–2)

  • iPad insurance can optionally be purchased by families in grades K–2.

  • Insurance coverage is $40 per year, per student.

  • The maximum insurance cost per family is $80 per year.

What the Insurance Covers

A summary of coverage can be found on the iPad Insurance and Coverage page.

How to Sign Up

  • Parents will opt in or opt out of coverage in Skyward Family Access.

  • If insurance is selected, payment must be made using the FNB eGov online payment portal.

  • Payment is due by September 15. After that date, coverage will be dropped until payment is received.

Waivers

  • Students enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch program may have the fee waived by submitting the iPad Insurance Waiver Form to a building office.

  • Families experiencing financial hardship should contact the building principal for additional waiver options.

Without Insurance

  • Families are responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement.

  • Replacement iPad: $299.

  • Repairs: typically range from $59 (headphone jack) to $239 (cracked screen).

Technical Difficulties

  • Students should report technical issues to their classroom teacher.

  • Teachers will work with the Technology Department if further support is needed.

Internet Filtering

Starting in the 2021–2022 school year, all district devices have Internet usage filtered and tracked at all times. Logs of student Internet access may be reviewed by district administration.

Apps

  • Each iPad has a Self Service app to download district-approved apps.

  • Students do not have access to the App Store.

  • Students can delete apps; deleted apps can be re-downloaded in Self Service.

  • Students are encouraged to delete apps no longer needed to free up storage.

Core Apps for Document Creation

Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are required as the core apps for classwork.

File Storage

  • Microsoft OneDrive: 1 TB storage (required for core app documents).

  • Apple iCloud: 200 GB storage (via Managed Apple ID).

  • Tutorials will guide students on organizing and saving files.

Managed Apple ID

  • Provided by Blackhawk School District.

  • Uses Single Sign-On (same username/password as Microsoft Office 365 email).

  • Provides access to 200 GB of iCloud storage.

  • Teachers will assist students in signing into their Managed Apple ID.

Offline Access

  • Files can be saved directly to the iPad for offline use.

  • Tutorials provide guidance on offline file management.

  • See the Connectivity Assistance page for help obtaining Internet access.

Restricted Areas

iPads are not permitted in:

  • Restrooms

  • Locker rooms

  • Nurse’s office (must be turned off)

Charging

  • Classroom charging cabinets are provided for all iPads.

  • iPads must be returned to charging cabinets each night.

  • In the event of virtual learning, students will be sent home with charging cables. These must be returned to the teacher the next school day.

Lunch, Gym, and Recess

  • iPads will remain at students’ desks or charging stations.

  • Teachers will lock classroom doors to ensure security.

Classroom Management

  • Teachers will say “screens down” when technology use must stop.

  • Noncompliance will be handled as a normal insubordination offense.

Passcodes

  • Grades K–2: students will not be required to set up passcodes on their iPads.

Replacement Cables/Adapters

Forgotten or Serviced iPads

  • Loaner iPads are available in the Patterson Library.

  • Teachers may provide a loaner if an iPad is forgotten or requires service.

  • If service is required (not due to physical damage), the teacher will submit an IT request.

  • If an iPad is forgotten for 5 consecutive days, it will be considered lost and replacement costs apply.

Damaged iPads

  • Report damage immediately to a teacher.

  • An iPad Damage Report must be completed and reviewed by an administrator.

  • If negligence is determined, the student is responsible (deductible, repair cost, or replacement).

  • A loaner will be provided until repair/replacement.

Stolen iPads

  • Report the theft to the local police and obtain a report.

  • Notify the building principal so IT can disable the device and attempt GPS recovery.

Device Management

  • District can track GPS, installed apps, and device activity.

  • Stolen iPads cannot be reused; district management profile reinstalls on Wi-Fi and GPS continues reporting.

Cases and Accessories

  • Students must use the district-provided case.

  • A list of approved accessories can be found on the "Approved iPad Accessories List" page.

  • Stickers are allowed if removable without damage. Drawing is not permitted.

  • Damage to cases will result in financial responsibility for replacement.

Student Identification

  • Each iPad has a sticker underneath the case stand.

  • The assigned student’s name also appears on the lock screen.

  • Teachers will assign students a specific charging spot in the cabinet.

Sanitization

  • Teachers will encourage students to sanitize iPads regularly.

  • Each teacher will establish routines for when and how iPads should be cleaned.

End-of-Year Collection

  • Student iPads will be collected, inventoried, and reviewed for damage at the end of each school year.

Charging Cables and Bricks

  • Cables and charging bricks will not be collected at year-end.

  • Students are expected to keep and use them the following year.

  • New sets will only be provided once per purchase cycle (when new iPads are issued).
