STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math—and at Blackhawk Intermediate School, it’s much more than an acronym. Our STEAM program provides hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences that encourage creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving across a variety of real-world challenges.
Held in a dedicated STEAM lab, students in grades K–4 engage in multidisciplinary projects that explore how the world works and how we can make it better. Each unit integrates elements of all five STEAM components, with focused lessons that deepen understanding in each area:
Science – Students explore natural and physical phenomena through observation, investigation, and discovery.
Technology – Lessons examine how humans have advanced in relation to the topic at hand, and students use classroom technology to research, design, and present science-based projects.
Engineering – Students apply what they've learned to design, build, and test creative solutions to real-world problems using models and materials.
Art – Integrated to promote creativity, cultural awareness, expression, and visual communication, art in STEAM strengthens problem-solving and innovation.
Math – Students track data, measure variables, and analyze outcomes to support and understand their experimental work.
The STEAM lab is a place where learning comes to life. Through collaboration, experimentation, and exploration, students gain confidence as thinkers, designers, and doers.
